The History of the Bean Bag

It was back in the 1960's when three Italian designers created a brand new form of chair which was to take the world by storm. The still highly popular bean bag has been a favourite with many designers across the years, each adding and re-designing it to suit the needs of every customer. From highly luxurious leather and faux fur bean bags, to the more practical wipe clean versions for children, there is most definitely a bean bag suitable for every home.

Originally created by one of Italy's leading furniture companies, Zanotta, this innovative design was said to be discovered accidentally when a bag of Styrofoam was left in the warehouse. Although never proven, Gatti, Teodora and Paolini claim to be the inventors when they found that Styrofoam moves with and moulds around the user making an extremely comfortable seat. This revolutionised the furniture world and was very quickly duplicated across the globe with many department stores stocking their own range.

The very first mass produced bag was known as a 'Sacco', made out of Italian leather and pear-shaped with a headrest. Once mass produced, this seating option became hugely popular almost overnight and this 'giant cushion' was a must-have for any stylish and fashionable home. The 1970's saw a huge boom in the number of designers adding their own form with slight adjustments to make it unique. This was also the time when children's bean bags took off due to the wipe clean and washable removable cases. Parents found children loved the feel and comfort associated with the seat, but also enjoyed the fact that when they got dirty, the cover could simply be removed and washed.

During the 1980's the popularity of this style of seat started to diminish due to concerns over the safety for children who could be injured through breathing in the pellets. There were a few incidences where children had got inside the bag and managed to harm themselves. In the 1990's this was eradicated when new safety features came into use to prevent the harm of young children. A better inner casing for the pellets and childproof zips ensured the popularity of seat remained. The 90's also saw an upgrade in the material used to fill the bag. Shredded Polyurethane replaced the Styrofoam or PVC pellets as a far more soft and comfy seat.

In more recent years, designers have opted to use much finer materials to make the seat appealing for 'grown-ups'. By using materials such as faux suede, designers have targeted a more sophisticated market making the bean bag a luxury furniture item. Many stores have included a bean bag within their collections as the perfect addition to any room. The practicality of the bean bag has also improved with the majority of covers being washable and far more durable than their leather predecessors which tended to rip and tear. After extensive use, naturally the foam will tend to get compressed, therefore replacement bags are also available to bring your seat new life and maintain the suppleness and comfort.

Today you can find a huge variety of shapes, sizes, colours and designs of bean bags to suit every home. Some may come pre-shaped in a seat form, some with headrests and even armrests or the traditional loose bag. The bean bag world has also extended into foot rests, loungers, box seats and even sofas. The newest form of bean bag is the giant variety such as the high quality Elephant bean bag range which are suitable for both indoors and out with a wipe clean and waterproof cover. Elephant bean bags come in an array of colours and patterns to choose from and are suitable for both adults and children. The range also includes an Elephant dog bed!

If you are re-designing your home or just giving your furniture a much needed update, the bean bag is the perfect addition. They are great value for money and robust which means they will last as well as being one of the most comfortable and versatile seats you will ever own.
